Samsung Galaxy SmartTag: Find Your Lost Gadgets

If you have a Galaxy mobile, the SmartTag applies, but then you must make sure you get hold of the Plus model. The accuracy is not better than Tile, but since more people potentially have the SmartThings app than the Tile app, there is a greater chance of finding the tile outside the home. It also has the best function for the button on the tray.

Design and features

SmartTag is a chubby little plastic rascal that doesn’t give the impression of being particularly high-tech or durable. It is, however, dustproof and splashproof according to ip53, it can handle rain but not lying in a puddle. It is thicker than the competition, but not disturbingly so. Unlike the Airtag, it has a hole, so you just need to thread it onto the key ring.

Pairing it with a Samsung Galaxy mobile, which is a requirement, is extremely easy as they find each other automatically. Then just name it in the SmartThings app (also a requirement). In the app, you can also decide what should happen when you briefly press, or hold down, the button on the side of the tray. If you have smart home gadgets compatible with Smartthings, you can control them with the tray. Very clever!

Tracking and precision

When you can’t find your gadget that the tile is attached to, just launch the SmartThings app and its find service. The app tries to connect with all connected tiles and reports if it has been connected, if the tile is nearby or when it last had contact with it. In the latter case, you can bring up a map of where it was last seen.

This is where you can ask other users for help in finding a tile that is on the move. As long as they have a Samsung mobile, have the SmartThings app installed, and have agreed to join the gadget finder gang. There are quite a few “ifs”. But no worse than finding it in central of New York in a couple of minutes! Beyond expectation! However, you probably shouldn’t have the same expectations in the lingonberry forest.

Once the tile is within reach, ask the app for help finding it. It then gives an indication of the strength of the signal, so you know if you are getting closer or further away. But it’s not better than that, which is frustrating. Once it makes contact, however, it is possible to ask the tray to play a signal. The volume is loud enough to be heard from a long distance away.
